The existing roof at Garage Mitsubishi van Veldhuizen consisted of EPS insulation and bituminous roofing. As part of the refurbishment, the roof was upgraded with 200–120 mm tapered PIR insulation, AllShield BarrierSheet and a new PVC waterproofing membrane.
The available structural capacity was an important design constraint. The complete new roof build-up had to remain within the maximum permanent roof load used in the project calculations while still leaving sufficient capacity for the planned PV installation.
The lightweight AllShield BarrierSheet adds approximately 3 kg/m² and provides a non-combustible protective layer directly beneath the new waterproofing membrane. Combined with the PIR insulation and PVC membrane, this allowed the existing roof to be upgraded without exceeding the calculated roof-load limit.
Renewing the waterproofing before installing PV also aligns the expected service life of the roof more closely with the PV investment, reducing the likelihood that panels will need to be removed prematurely for major roof replacement.
For this project, the selected roof build-up provided the fire-protection and technical documentation required for assessment of the roof with PV. The completed solution was accepted for the project, enabling the building owner to proceed with the solar installation.
Thanks to AllShield BarrierSheets, our insurer is now willing to provide coverage.
