Good design, quality components, inspection and maintenance can reduce the probability of a PV fire but they cannot eliminate it.
The next question is therefore just as important: What happens if a fire does start? Insurance can cover the financial damage. It cannot prevent business interruption, lost production or lost customers. AllShield develops passive fire protection systems designed to limit fire spread and help prevent the underlying roof assembly from becoming part of the fire.
AllShield BarrierSheet is a 2.5 mm lightweight, A1 non-combustible cementitious Fire board installed beneath the waterproofing membrane. At approximately 3 kg/m², it adds minimal dead load and can be used in new-build, refurbishment and existing-roof projects. AllShield BarrierSheet is FM Approved under FM 4470 and FM 4478 for specified roof and roof-PV assemblies listed in RoofNav. In independent ZAG fire tests on roof-PV configurations, it prevented direct flame penetration into deeper roof layers.

That is why AllShield focuses on consequence limitation. Prevent ignition where possible. But design the roof so that when ignition does occur, the fire has less opportunity to develop into a major property loss.
